Figuring out what homeschooling supplies are 'must haves' can be difficult for parents. If the proper materials are not supplied it may make it a lot harder to effectively teach a child at home. Having the necessary homeschooling supplies helps to ensure you are giving your child the best education that they can receive. What follows are the 'must have' homeschooling supplies for any parent that chooses to do home schooling with their child.
Basic Classroom Supplies
Basic classroom supplies are those that can be found in any classroom across the country. They are the obvious materials that you will need to effectively carry out your school lessons. They include pens, paper, notebooks, glue, scissors, calculators, rulers, flashcards, crayons, markers, and other art supplies. These are items that can be bought and re-used year after year. Be sure to let your child know that these supplies are not to be taken for granted, as they can start to add up in cost.
Homeschool Textbooks
Homeschool textbooks should be bought from a reputable homeschooling supplies retailer. These textbooks are usually different from the average textbooks available in public and private schools. Homeschooling offers quite a bit of flexibility for what a parent teaches their child. You can purchase several different homeschool textbooks and can actually make your own personalized book based on what you want to teach and what curriculum topics you prefer to leave out for a particular year.
Lesson Plans
Lesson plans can be purchased from a homeschooling supplies retailer, or you can make up your own detailed lesson plans according to the specified curriculum you choose to follow. Lesson plans are a very important tool to help you stay on target with your homeschooling. Without detailed lesson plans set forth by the parents, it's more likely that schooling will get off track and all of the curriculum for the year may not be taught. Lesson plans should be laid out for every subject that is taught. Even art lessons and music lessons should be planned out ahead of time.
Other Books
Homeschooling supplies should also include other books besides the homeschool textbooks. It's a good idea to get your kids reading all types of different books from mysteries to science fiction and of course the classics. These books can be added to the homeschool textbooks to further teach lessons. They can also be a creative way for a parent to get a child to read more by purchasing books on topics in which their child shows interest.
Reference Books
In addition to homeschool textbooks, a parent should be sure that they have a wide variety of reference books on hand for their homeschooling materials. These books include encyclopedias, a dictionary, a thesaurus, and an atlas. These materials provide the child with extra supplementation on subjects and give them reference points to look up important information. Reference books are widely used in the curriculum for homeschooling. A parent may also want to include other reference materials such as a globe or a large wall map of the United States.
Finding the best homeschooling supplies can sometimes be challenging for parents. However, simply making a checklist of the basic recommended resources, including homeschool textbooks, lesson plans and other supplemental materials, is a great way to start.
