To write an effective research paper you will need to fulfill some important criteria. The good news is that if you are unfamiliar with how to go about doing this then there is plenty of good advice out there that will ensure that you can get the best grade possible. Understandably the thought of writing a research paper is something that can cause dread if you do not know what you are doing. Before you begin to write the research paper, the very first thing that you should do is organize your time effectively. For a ten or twenty page research paper, typically you will need about a month to do the research, collate the data and then write up the report.
With this in mind it is a good idea to take a look at your schedule for the next month. Try to identify clear time periods when you will be able to sit down and focus on the research paper, doing this will keep your productivity levels high and will help you to avoid a last minute panic.
Once you have done this, you can move on to the actual project. Before you begin the research you will want to write down a solid and purposeful research statement. This is basically the main question that you intend to answer and what the research will be carried out on. It does not need to be a complicated sentence; in fact it is probably better to keep it simple. Try to make it specific as it is far easier to write a project on a narrow subject matter than something that is more suitable for a dissertation.
Now we can begin the research. If you are not already familiar with the library at your College or University then it is useful for you to become acquainted beforehand. Understanding how the library references its books and organizes them into different departments will make your research much more efficient and less time consuming. Like most libraries you will probably be able to find what you are looking for through a PC, so it is good to be aware of that also.
As you read through the books and articles that are relevant to the research paper it is good practice to record on small pieces of card the page numbers, author and title of the resource. Not only will this make it easier to locate certain information as you write the paper, but it will help you to construct your footnotes and bibliography as you go along.
Once the research is complete you can start the writing process. Begin by creating a rough outline of each important section. They can be distinguished by each separate point you intend to argue. This will form the basis of the paper.
Now develop the introduction so that it addresses the main research question and then in the body of the paper address the key arguments that you have developed from the research. The concluding paragraph should seek to summarize what you have written before answering the original hypothesis.
After you have done this, remember to leave enough time to check through the paper and correct any errors and spelling mistakes.
